Krishnapuram Palace, Kayamkulam

Krishnapuram Palace at Kayamkulam is built in authentic Kerala style architecture and used to be the residence of the earlier rulers of Kayamkulam. Now the palace is protected as a monument by the Archaeology department. The elegant pitched roof palace is located 47 KM from Alleppey. Recently the palace underwent a scientific renovation for safe guarding the archaeological artefacts. The palace displays a mural painting ‘Gajendra Moksham’ of a size of 49 Sq.m and it is believed to be the largest of its kind so far discovered in Kerala. The theme of the painting is the Moksha (Salvation) of an elephant king ‘Gajendra’ by Lord Vishnu. This famous painting is placed at the entrance to the palace from the pond so that the Raja’s could worship the deity after their bath. The palace has a huge collection of Coins, Megalithic remains, wood artefacts, and sculptors made of brass and stone. In the museum a famous sword ‘Kayamkulam Val’ is exhibited which belonged to the Rajas of Kayamkulam kingdom. The speciality of the sword is that it is sharpened on both side and so more dangerous than other martial weapons. An attractive antique Buddha statue is displayed in a hall in the palace and the hall is known as the Buddha mandapam. The Krishnapuram palace has a Bible written in Sanskrit in the antique collection.  A pond below the palace provides an air-conditioning effect to the interior rooms. The Krishnapuram palace is surrounded by beautiful garden with different varieties of flora.
