Neyyar dam


Neyyar dam is a gravity dam on the Neyyar River. It is 30km away from the Thiruvananthapuram city. Height of the dam is 56m and length is 295m and is a famous picnic spot. The dam was established in 1958 and is located on the foot of the Western Ghats which presents a scenic background beauty to the dam area. Agasthya koodam peak is in the vicinity of Neyyar dam. Sivanantha Ashram that conducts yoga and meditation classes for foreigners as well as natives is very near to the dam. The yoga centre premises have some tall and vigour trees which are live examples of the care of the inhabitants. Rubber plantations are visible on the nearby areas and people can observe the harvesting methods. Veeranakavu Sreedharma Shastha temple and Mangara Muttom Siva temple are the main temples in close proximity to Neyyar dam. The wildlife of the dam area includes gaur, sloth bear, Nilgiri Tahr, Jungle cat, Tiger, Slender Loris, Nilgiri langur, elephants and sambar deer. Reptiles like King Cobra, Travancore Tortoise are also found in the forest area. The dam site hosts a crocodile breeding centre and a lion safari park. The crocodile farm is named as Steve Irwin National park after the late naturalist Steve Irwin as an honour to his life dedicated for crocodiles. Boating facilities are available in the Neyyar Lake for the tourists.
