Kerala Folklore Theatre & Museum


Kerala Folklore museum is located at Thevara in Ernakulam district. The theatre cum museum is functioning in a three storey building which is constructed in Malabar, Cochin and Travancore architectural styles. The remnants from a 16th century old Tamilnadu temple and wooden carving from Kerala is used to build the entrance. The entrance door is decorated with the famous ‘manichitratazhu’ (a traditional ornate door of Kerala) and it enhances the beauty of the whole structure. The museum was opened in 2009 and it showcases the rich heritage of Kerala in the numerous art and dance forms. The collections include the ancient masks, sculptures made of wood, stone and bronze, musical instruments, costumes of ritual and traditional art forms, traditional jewellery, Stone Age utensils, manuscripts of rare medicinal and astrological secrets are preserved with utmost care in this museum. The first floor is called as ‘kalithattu’ literally means a floor for play and is displays the different art form costumes. It includes the sample costumes of Kathakali, Theyyam, Ottanthullal, and Mohiniyattam. The second floor is called ‘kamaladalam’ (lotus petal) and showcases a vast collection of mural paintings and has a ceiling made of 60 wooden chiselled frames. Stage performances are conducted here every day at 6.30pm in the theatre. Mr. George Thaliath and his wife Annie George had taken the effort behind this project along with craftsmen for long seven years. The visiting hours is 9.30am to 7pm. Entrance fee for adults is Rs.100 and students is Rs.50/- as of now. The preserved facts are displayed very specifically and descriptions are provided so that it is understandable to visitors.
