Thiruvananthapuram Zoo is located at 3km distance from the Trivandrum railway station/ bus stand and is spread across 55 acres of land. It was an initiative of the Travancore ruler Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma who ruled between 1830 and 1847 and his brother Uthram Thirunal along with the British Resident William Cullen formally opened the zoo in 1857 for the public. The premise consists of woodland, lakes and lawns. The establishment purpose behind the zoo was for recreation so large iron – barred cages were built to keep the animals. But later stage it turned out to be conservational as loss of forest area and human encroachment became a threat for the wildlife in general. The zoo houses 82 different animal species from around the world. Lion-tailed macaque, Langur, Rhinoceros, leopard, royal tiger, lion, cheetah, deer, boar, elephants, Zebra, Giraffe, Cape buffalo and hippos are inhabitants of the zoo. A snake park is conserved inside the zoo where poisonous and non-poisonous snakes are kept. A huge collection of birds such as Ostrich, Strokes, Peacocks, Vultures, Emu, Kites, and Pelican are kept here in indigenous living conditions. Thiruvananthapuram zoo is the oldest zoo in Asia.

Priyadarshini Planetarium is closely attached with the Kerala Science and Technology Museum at Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum). It is open for the public since 1994 and remains closed on Mondays. The working time of the planetarium is from 10.30am to 12pm and 3pm to 5pm. The planetarium is equipped with GM-11 star field projector. This device can project almost all the constituents of the observable universe. The projector can replicate the star studded view of the night sky from 12,500 years back and forth as per choice. The shows conducted here share knowledge of the outer space to the viewers along with information regarding astro physics and astronomy. The spectacular beach at Poovar is 12km south of Kovalam beach. Earlier this area was a famous trading centre of timber, sandalwood, ivory and spices. The central mosque at Poovar was built by Mallik Deenar, an eighteenth century Muslim preacher. The ancient name of Poovar was Pokkumoosapuram. King Marthanda Varma while escaping from the Ettuveetil Pillamar (Lords of the eight houses) reached here. That was spring season and the trees on both sides of the Neyyar River were full of flowers. The river was also filled with flowers that fell from the trees and that pleasant scenery fascinated the king. The king commented on the river as ‘poo-var’ which means flower filled river in Malayalam. Thus the name Poovar got famed after wards. The tourists love the white sand beach and many resorts and restaurants are available in the vicinity. Village tours, back water trips are arranged here for the visitors. Country boat rides are another acitivity much preferred by tourists. Vizhinjam is a famous natural fishing harbour and it is just 14km away from Poovar. Marine Drive is a picturesque esplanade in Kochi. It is facing the back waters and is a very popular hangout in Kochi. Vehicles are strictly prohibited on this walkway. It starts from the High Court Junction and extends up to Rajendra Maidan and is about 3kms. There are some boat jetties along the walkway. The GCDA constructed the present Marine Drive which includes the Shanmugham Road, part of the Kochi Lake and the present Marine walkway. Kerala Folklore museum is located at Thevara in Ernakulam district. The theatre cum museum is functioning in a three storey building which is constructed in Malabar, Cochin and Travancore architectural styles. The remnants from a 16th century old Tamilnadu temple and wooden carving from Kerala is used to build the entrance. The entrance door is decorated with the famous ‘manichitratazhu’ (a traditional ornate door of Kerala) and it enhances the beauty of the whole structure. The museum was opened in 2009 and it showcases the rich heritage of Kerala in the numerous art and dance forms. The collections include the ancient masks, sculptures made of wood, stone and bronze, musical instruments, costumes of ritual and traditional art forms, traditional jewellery, Stone Age utensils, manuscripts of rare medicinal and astrological secrets are preserved with utmost care in this museum. The first floor is called as ‘kalithattu’ literally means a floor for play and is displays the different art form costumes. It includes the sample costumes of Kathakali, Theyyam, Ottanthullal, and Mohiniyattam. The second floor is called ‘kamaladalam’ (lotus petal) and showcases a vast collection of mural paintings and has a ceiling made of 60 wooden chiselled frames. Stage performances are conducted here every day at 6.30pm in the theatre. Mr. George Thaliath and his wife Annie George had taken the effort behind this project along with craftsmen for long seven years. The visiting hours is 9.30am to 7pm. Entrance fee for adults is Rs.100 and students is Rs.50/- as of now. The preserved facts are displayed very specifically and descriptions are provided so that it is understandable to visitors.

Neyyar dam

Neyyar dam is a gravity dam on the Neyyar River. It is 30km away from the Thiruvananthapuram city. Height of the dam is 56m and length is 295m and is a famous picnic spot. The dam was established in 1958 and is located on the foot of the Western Ghats which presents a scenic background beauty to the dam area. Agasthya koodam peak is in the vicinity of Neyyar dam. Sivanantha Ashram that conducts yoga and meditation classes for foreigners as well as natives is very near to the dam. The yoga centre premises have some tall and vigour trees which are live examples of the care of the inhabitants. Rubber plantations are visible on the nearby areas and people can observe the harvesting methods. Veeranakavu Sreedharma Shastha temple and Mangara Muttom Siva temple are the main temples in close proximity to Neyyar dam. The wildlife of the dam area includes gaur, sloth bear, Nilgiri Tahr, Jungle cat, Tiger, Slender Loris, Nilgiri langur, elephants and sambar deer. Reptiles like King Cobra, Travancore Tortoise are also found in the forest area. The dam site hosts a crocodile breeding centre and a lion safari park. The crocodile farm is named as Steve Irwin National park after the late naturalist Steve Irwin as an honour to his life dedicated for crocodiles. Boating facilities are available in the Neyyar Lake for the tourists.
